Taichung’s Rainbow Village was actually a place where people lived. Located in Nantu District in Taichung, Taiwan ~ Rainbow village was one of the many dedicated military housing scattered across Taiwan. These temporary houses was established when Chiang Kai Shek and many of his loyal soldiers fled mainland China during the civil war and followed him to Taiwan. 🌈
The housing settlements eventually became permanent residence for the soldiers and their families. It is also where most of them had decided to stay and spend their lives after the war. Since it was meant to be temporary and built with cheap materials, most of the houses became dilapidated and began to get run down. Eventually, developers started buying these lands and ageing properties for redevelopment. However…
A soldier, by the name of Huang Yung Fu, refused to sell his house. Even though most, if not all of his neighbors, had already left and gone. Then one day, out of boredom, Huang began painting his house with many colorful and artistic designs. His art eventually spread out to his former neighbor’s abandoned houses. Nowadays, Huang Yung Fu’s Rainbow Village ~ a collection of 11 houses ~ is considered a modern art installation. A bright tourist spot that is definitely worth a side-trip when visiting Taichung.
And the best thing? Admission is FREE. 🌈
It was tricky getting there and we almost got lost. Since the place we were staying in (Kiwi Express Hotel) was only walking distance from the Taiwan Main Railway Station, we took bus 56 and got off a University Stop (LingTung University). I didn’t know that we were supposed to walk for a bit to get to where Rainbow Village is. The bus driver couldn’t help us due to language barrier and kept saying that he needs to sleep 😂, but good thing that we came upon a group of Young Taiwanese students and pointed us to where we should be going. 🤩
HOW TO GET THERE:
The attraction is located in Nantun District, quite a distance from Taichung’s City Center. If coming from the Taipen Main Railway Station, take Bus # 27 – 29 – 30 – 40 – 56 – 89.
Stop is LingTung University. Upon getting off at LingTung University Stop, walk around 400 meters south on LingTung Road (see image below) then you can see Rainbow Village on your right.
